Granular Ferric Oxide (GFO) is the only chemical utilized to reduce Phosphates (PO4). Elevated Phosphate levels promote the growth of undesirable algae. High P04 levels can also have a negative impact on coral growth and coloration.
GFO also absorbs silicates and does not release absorbed substances. Silicates are known to contribute to the growth of red slime. Recommended use in a media reactor, but can be used in a media bag which can be placed in a high flow area of the sump.
It's important to use a phosphate test kit when using GFO because you do not want to strip all P04 out of the water.
Acceptable P04 range for a reef tank is <.03ppm.
